Our house at Rathnafishogue, close to the river
Dereen. My father fly-fished for trout in this river. A
stream ran in front of the trees in the foreground of the
picture. There was a small plantation of resinous
conifers and an orchard to the left of the house. |
 |
The Dereen in flood, submerging the 'stepping
stones' by which it could be crossed on foot at the ford
at the bottom of our lane. On the right of the picture is
the (partly submerged) road leading to the Borough, down
which Charlie Carroll would come to cross the 'stepping
stones' when visiting us. At the top of the picture is
the distinctive form of Eagle Hill, the highest point for
many miles around. |

Looking down the Borough road towards the valley
through which the river Dereen ran. Our house was in the
trees in the middle of the picture, below the triangular
field. |
